Howorth Air Technology Ltd is pleased to announce the formation of a new division – Howorth Bio Technology. The new division is headed up by Product and Business Manager Mike Aitchison, and has been established to service Howorth’s ever-increasing market demands for effective, safe, state-of-the-art vapour phase fumigation systems, whether to be used to control healthcare-associated infections or eradicate micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts in the food industry.

Under Howorth’s registered product brand name, BioGen™, our new bio-technology division will supply DVHP™ (Dry Vaporised Hydrogen Peroxide) systems and decontamination equipment into both our long established Healthcare and Pharmaceutical market sectors, as well as developing DVHP™ systems for Life Sciences, Veterinary and Food Processing and Manufacturing markets.

All BioGen’s™ new family of DVHP™ standard model generators are designed around unique Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) technology with patents pending. This highly successfully technology has been developed over many years, and is applicable in both pre-occupational decontamination and service, as well as equipment supply projects.

All validated results, confirmed via BIs (Biological Indicators), prove that Howorth’s BioGen™ DVHP™ vapour phase fumigation systems are an effective bactericide, virucide and sporicide AND are biodegradable, leaving no residue.

A unique function of the BioGen™ system is its real time cycle monitoring, which can be displayed or downloaded immediately to PC or on-site BMS to give immediate customer confidence that the decontamination cycle has been effective.

The BioGen™ generated DRY vapour evaporates within 150mm of the ultrasonic nozzle(s), and does not settle or disperse on contact with surfaces, so no wetting or micro-condensation occurs.

Bringing a New Dimension to Containment

Howorth Pharma has added a new product to its portfolio of market-leading High Containment Screens with the recent launch of its new 5D model. The 5D HCS offers unparalleled flexibility combined with high levels of operator protection, whether in new or retro-fit applications.

Developed in collaboration with existing booth operators, the 5D HCS offers the full range of movement side to side, front to back, up and down, and with controlled rotation, but is also able to tilt.

5D Screen - Range of Movement

This flexibility ensures maximum comfort for the user, thus making it possible for them to work as safely and effectively as possible. As with all Howorth’s screens, the 5D HCS is available in a variety of sizes and materials and with optional extras, so can be designed specifically to fit clients’ requirements.

Howorth’s High Containment Screens are a simple but effective way of boosting the containment capabilities of any downflow booth. Downflow booths are designed to protect the operator from dust rising in to the breathing zone when handling potent substances. The HCS is fitted into the booth, forming an actual barrier between the operator and the dust source, keeping all dust-laden air close to the booth’s exhaust grilles. As they can be retrofitted into existing booths, they are the ideal solution if a manufacturer starts working with more potent compounds that may require additional operator protection. Independent testing of Howorth’s HCS has confirmed that OELs as low as 0.5µ/m³ can be achieved

Graham Hind Joins Howorth’s USA Operation

Howorth Air Technology is pleased to announce that Graham Hind will be heading up the formation of Howorth Air Technology Inc. Graham is joining the US operations as CEO of Howorth Inc, and is relocating to North America with his family in order to give full commitment to the position.

Using his wealth of experience gained over 16 years of working with Howorth in sales and engineering in senior management roles, Graham’s initial focus will not only be on supporting the company’s existing efforts in the area, but also on developing and promoting new business opportunities throughout North America, Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico – a vital strategy in the continuing growth of Howorth’s global brand.

Howorth’s Managing Director, Adrian Parkin, says: “Graham’s relocation will be a major boost to our business opportunities in North America. His record with Howorth speaks for itself, and I know the dedication and commitment he has always shown to the company will continue to flourish as he takes Howorth across the Atlantic.”

Installation, commissioning, service and maintenance will be undertaken by Howorth’s existing US-based team, with all project work to be carried out at the company’s headquarters in Bolton, UK.

As part of the company’s ongoing drive to build and further consolidate its position in foreign markets, the Howorth team, headed up by CEO Adrian Parkin, has once again been stacking up Airmiles by attending overseas exhibitions and conferences.

Interphex Puerto Rico – Booth #736

In October, the team is off to Puerto Rico to attend Interphex PR 2011, and will be exhibiting its new flexible glovebag isolator on the stand. Although Interphex is normally targeted solely at the pharmaceutical industry, this year it is also covering the healthcare sector, so represents an ideal opportunity for Howorth to support its Puerto Rican agent, Inseco, and promote both its medical and pharmaceutical divisions.

ISPE Annual Meeting, Texas – Tabletop #603
In November, the team packs up its flexible glovebag isolator and heads to Texas for the ISPE Annual Meeting, which will be the first opportunity for the new CEO of Howorth Inc, Graham Hind, to introduce himself to the American market. Mark Smith, Howorth’s US Field Services Manager, will also join the others there.

Expoquimia, Spain – Hall #7
Also in November, Dave Jackson and Michael Mellor, who head up the company’s pharmaceutical division, will be in Spain with Spanish agent, Dara, attending Expoquimia. This exhibition will be particularly important as Howorth will be introducing its new 5D screen, for use with the Howorth High Containment Booth.

Pharmtech, Russia – Booth #B01
After Expoquimia, Dave and Michael have a few days to empty their suitcases and do their laundry before repacking and heading to the 13th International Specialised Exhibition at Pharmtech 2011, where Howorth will be exhibiting with Rolstech, the company’s Russian partner.

This flurry of overseas activity marks the end of a busy year for Howorth’s international business plans – earlier in the year the team also attended exhibitions in Dubai and throughout the US. 2011 is also the year Howorth put the final touches to Howorth Singapore, a regional headquarters which will service all of SE Asia.

Service & Validation Division – Still at the Top with Spire Healthcare

Howorth Air Technology has recently been awarded the service and validation contract with private healthcare specialists, Spire Healthcare, for the second year running. The contract covers all Spire’s operating theatre suites, both ultra clean and general theatres, and includes microbiological testing in the general theatres.

Spire had engaged Howorth to carry out limited service functions at its hospitals since 2009, but when the entire contract came up for renewal in 2010, Howorth was successful in its bid to take over the total Theatre Test and Validation contract for all 37 Spire hospitals.

The contract has been retained for 2011 due to the positive working relationship established between Spire and Howorth, with particular emphasis being placed on Howorth’s willingness and ability to work in a flexible manner, ensuring Spire receives the service and validation provision it needs, when it needs it.

Keeping to the Schedule – Howorth at the Royal Liverpool Hospital

Howorth Air Technology has recently completed a major project at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. The company upgraded Theatres 9 and 10 by installing its market-leading Exflow Ultra Clean ventilation canopy, making both theatres suitable for orthopaedic surgery, as well as the full range of general surgery. This upgrade is fundamental is assisting the Trust to meet its orthopaedic operating list targets.

Theatre 10, Royal Liverpool

The project, which delivers the newest technological advancements in operating theatre design, was completed on schedule, despite the additional challenges created for Howorth by all building activity having to take place next to a live operating department, making it essential to keep dust, noise, and general disturbance to an absolute minimum.

The theatres have been equipped with Howorth lateral movement pendants and Martin MarLED operating lights to provide the clinicians with maximum flexibility of use in the operating clean zone.

The contract included the complete replacement of all engineering services and major structural building modifications to accommodate the new Howorth Exflow 28 canopies through the existing concrete viewing gallery soffits. Construction of a substantial structural framework was necessary to support the new theatre equipment.

Ingress and installation of goods required additional project management expertise as the theatres are situated on the 11th floor, with all associated plant equipment installed on the 12th floor roof.
