On 7th February, the Irish Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, officially opened the Women’s Health Unit and refurbished Operating Suite and Patient Services Centre at Mount Carmel Private Hospital, Dublin.

The expansion and upgrade of theatre facilities was undertaken by Howorth AirTechnology, which has an established relationship with the hospital’s operators, the Mount Carmel Medical Group, following a major project in 2008 at sister hospital, Aut Even. When it was necessary to bring in sub contractors, Howorth used local contractors wherever possible.

Howorth installed a package of operating theatre equipment, the main feature being its market-leading Exflow UCV Canopy, enabling surgery to be carried out in ultra clean conditions. The Exflow was complemented by an operating theatre control panel, twin screen X-ray viewer, pendants, lights and IPS/UPS systems.

Howorth Pharma, best known for providing bespoke containment solutions for the pharmaceutical and medical markets, has recently supplied one of its downflow booths to a rather unusual client – Park Valley Dyers.

Park Valley Dyers is a new company, formed following a collaboration between Holmfirth Dyers and Camira Fabrics. It is the first dye house to be built in the last 25 years, bucking a trend which has seen the textile industry decline considerably in recent decades.

The booth was first showcased inNew Yorkat the Interphex pharmaceutical show, and was designed by Howorth for use when working with pharmaceutical compounds. It provides an exceptional level of protection for operators at Park Valley Dyers, who will use it to ensure safety during the precise measuring and weighing of dry powder dyes taken from bulk containers. This procedure is part of an exclusive new low liquor dyeing process the company is introducing, which could save millions of litres of fresh water annually.

Powder Handling Booth

This innovative project marks a return to working with the textile industry for Howorth for, as befitting a Lancashire company founded in Rochdale and operating to this day fromBolton, Howorth’s history started with the mills. The air in the mills had to be kept hot and humid to prevent the thread breaking and as a result rooms were poorly ventilated and the air was often thick with cotton dust. In 1858, Rochdale man James Howorth set up James Howorth & Co Ltd, manufacturing apparatus for humidifying, ventilating, heating, air-conveying, dust control and drying applications within the textile industry. Over 150 years later, the company continues to engineer clean air for pharmaceutical, healthcare and medical clients around the world.

Michael Mellor, Technical Director of Howorth Pharma, says: As Howorth has many ties to the textile industry, we are proud to be working with Park Valley Dyers. We are confident that Howorth’s input will enable operators to carry out their work safely and efficiently.”

Howorth has developed a new Screenless Exflow™ Ultra Clean Canopy to complement the range of Exflows. The Exflow Evolution.

As operating theatres become ever more high tech, featuring integrated digital technology requiring monitors and touchscreens within the operating site clean zone, as well as integrated scanners, X-rays and microscopes, space, particularly at ceiling level, is at an ever-increasing premium. A 21st century operating theatre needs to allow for flexibility of equipment choice and changing work practices, as well as looking streamlined and almost futuristic in design.

In response to this, clean air engineering specialist, Howorth Air Technology, has developed a new Screenless Exflow Ultra Clean Canopy to complement the range of Exflows it has been installing in private and public hospitals around the world for over 40 years.

When designing the Screenless Exflow, Howorth could have easily taken the approach adopted by its competitors: positioning bulky low level recirculation ducts around the theatre with fans and chilled water coils in the theatre ceiling void or in vertical ducts around the theatre, necessitating plant and ductwork systems which are totally impractical in most retrofit situations. However, in keeping with the company’s innovative approach to design, Howorth chose to rather develop its own unique system which is suitable for both retrofits and new builds.

Howorth’s Screenless Exflow essentially retains the basic construction of its market leading existing models, the Exflow 28 and Exflow 32, but with some innovative engineering at the air discharge, the company has recreated, and in many ways improved, the performance of the systems without the need for the partial walls or the additional requirement of low level recirculation ducts, remote fans or cooling coils. The unit remains an integral fan unit of modular construction, ideal for new build or retro-fit situations. Installation time is kept to an absolute minimum and long term maintenance costs are lower than competitive products.

At the core of this new product are the patented Passive Coanda and Active Coanda systems. These are unassisted (Passive) or assisted (Active) air displacement devices, designed to replicate the controlled airflow of a solid side-screen. Both the screenless models, currently designated the Exflow 28-12 and Exflow 32-12, exceed the performance requirements of HTM 03-01 in many areas, particularly with regard to the non-entrainment test. The primary airflow to the theatre remains the same as with other Exflow models, rather than needing the increased air volume required by competitive systems, therefore running costs are also lower.

Backed by the Howorth’s 150 years of experience in engineering clean air, the new Screenless Exflows take operating theatre design into the 21st century and beyond.

Howorth Air Technology Ltd is proud to announce the formation of a new division – Howorth Bio Technology.
The new division is headed up by Product and Business Manager Mike Aitchison, and has been established to service Howorth’s ever increasing market demands for effective, safe, state-of-the-art vapour phase fumigation systems.

Howorth Bio Technology

Under Howorth’s registered product brand name, BioGen™, our new bio-technology division will supply DVHP™ (Dry Vapour Hydrogen Peroxide) systems and decontamination equipment into both our long established Healthcare and Pharmaceutical market sectors, as well as developing DVHP™ systems for Life Sciences, Veterinary and Food Processing and Manufacturing markets.

Developed in collaboration with existing booth operators, the 5D HCS offers the full range of movement side to side, front to back, up and down, and with controlled rotation, but is also able to tilt.

5D Screen - Range of Movement

This flexibility ensures maximum comfort for the user, thus making it possible for them to work as safely and effectively as possible. As with all Howorth’s screens, the 5D HCS is available in a variety of sizes and materials and with optional extras, so can be designed specifically to fit clients’ requirements.

Howorth’s High Containment Screens are a simple but effective way of boosting the containment capabilities of any downflow booth. Downflow booths are designed to protect the operator from dust rising in to the breathing zone when handling potent substances. The HCS is fitted into the booth, forming an actual barrier between the operator and the dust source, keeping all dust-laden air close to the booth’s exhaust grilles. As they can be retrofitted into existing booths, they are the ideal solution if a manufacturer starts working with more potent compounds that may require additional operator protection. Independent testing of Howorth’s HCS has confirmed that OELs as low as 0.5µ/m³ can be achieved
