INVENTORS OF THE ULTRA CLEAN OPERATING THEATRE

In the early 1960s, Howorth’s experience and skills were applied in response to the needs of the medical profession. Working in close collaboration with the renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Sir John Charnley, Howorth designed and developed the world’s first Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) system for operating theatres

From this pioneering first step, the company went on to create the Howorth EXFLOW UCV which remains a global leader in the field of ultra-clean ventilation.

The latest variant, the screenless Exflow Evolution UCV, addresses the need for more space in theatres. Utilising the basic construction of the existing EXFLOW28 and 32 the Evolution incorporates a patented Coanda design to eliminate the need for side screens.

The use of Howorth’s EXFLOW UCV has been proven to reduce the occurrence of micro-organisms within operating rooms and more specifically the wound site.

Installed in operating rooms worldwide, the Howorth EXFLOW UCV canopy is available in two sizes, EXFLOW28 (2.8m) and EXFLOW32 (3.2m). Both models provide microbiological cleanliness and airflow results exceeding all current regulatory requirements.

The EXFLOW Evolution screenless UCV canopy incorporates a patented Coanda air containment system to maximise the clean area and minimise the risk of contamination in the clean zone without the need for side screens, low-level vents or mechanical extract.

Howorth Air Diffusion Units can be of great advantage to many areas in Healthcare. Connected in a similar fashion to a UCV system, high-grade HEPA filters sit behind a patented perforated air diffusion pattern. This pattern allows for a much more effective dilution in the room than you would see from a four-way diffuser, more commonly used.

The ADU has many applications such as layup prep rooms, isolation rooms, pharmacy areas and pharmaceutical applications. The ADU conforms to all aspects of HTM 03 01 in terms of noise levels as there are no integral fans, as connecting ductwork and air volume is used to create the dilution, limiting the risk of cross-contamination to surgical instruments or patients with immunosuppressive disorders.

Howorth have a leading design team and can advise on any questions, we can ensure that the system is fit for purpose and has the necessary design outlay for the units to pass verifications and ensure conformability.

Theatre Control Panels are a key part of any Ultra Clean Operating Room. Howorth’s panel is clear, easy to use and can be fully integrated with the Exflow UCV system, surgical lights and other operating room equipment.

Our range of theatre control panels provides the surgical team with their environmental controls and equipment monitoring alarms, together with clocks and many optional extra facilities, including X-Ray film viewers or monitor screens. The panels are fully HTM 03-01 compliant and feature;

  • A display of all theatre environmental factors
  • Integral X-ray film viewers
  • Monitors to view digital images
  • Easy wipe clean stainless-steel or membrane facia
  • Touch screen option

These systems can be mounted into either a stainless-steel facia or behind a polycarbonate membrane.

The membrane option offers the advantage that all switches and lamps are mounted behind the flush, easy clean membrane.

Also exclusive to the Howorth theatre control panel is the graphic visual representation of the Exflow UCV unit and the operating lamps for ease of recognition, monitoring performance and control switching.
