Software Engineer

We are delighted that due to our continued growth, we have a vacancy for a Software Engineering role within our Pharma team.
The successful candidates will be responsible for managing projects from initial design through to Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), ensuring full compliance with company standards and industry best practices. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality systems that meet both customer specifications and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
As part of your role at Howorth, your responsibilities will include:
- Design, develop, and implement PLC-based control systems for industrial automation projects based on project specifications and customer needs.
- Program and troubleshoot PLCs from major manufacturers (e.g. Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
- Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications for operator interaction with control systems (using FTView, TIA Portal - WinCC).
- Provide the documentation department with necessary technical information and contribute to the preparation of required documents, such as Software Design Specifications (SDS), as needed.
- Participate in system testing, commissioning, and start-up activities to ensure proper functionality and performance.
- Collaborate with project managers, electrical design engineers and the commissioning team to ensure timely and accurate delivery of automation solutions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to control systems, instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Proven experience in PLC programming using ladder logic, function block diagrams, or structured text.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet)
- Experience with HMI configuration.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
- Experience with virtual machines is desirable.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
Desired Experience
- Good communicator both internally and with external suppliers and clients.
- Ability to research information and apply this into live projects.
- Experience of 3rd party equipment integration and controls systems
